Can I take the FE Exam outside of the US?

The exam is offered in some areas outside of the US, you can see them at this link:

Before getting too much in to the details, you should do two things to ensure your eligibility for taking the FE exam.

The first is to do an ABET accredited program search. If your program is accredited, then applying for the exam should be fairly streamline, if not, then you will need to do one more step prior to applying. You can do a search here:

If your program isn’t accredited, that won’t be a problem, it’s only another step that must be complete.

Here you will find a lot of good information for individuals who were educated outside of the United States. You will find that you need to do a credential evaluation, which this page will give you information on.

Development Destroyer #1: “I Don’t Think I Know Enough”

We all start here

Every single one of your peers you look up to, every engineering hero you have started where you are right now.

“I don’t think I know enough.”

You don’t know enough about Engineering. Or Math. Or Electrical Circuits. Or Mechanics of Materials. Or you can’t figure out how to solve a Second Order Non Homogeneous Differential Equation.

It feels like there are a ton of moving pieces, and you have to know everything about all of them before you can move forward with taking on the Engineer In Training Exam.

Real successful Engineers know that’s a lie

It’s not that you don’t need to know about Statics and Dynamics.

You do need some background in all these subjects (but we didn’t spend four years in College for no reason).

Once you commit to taking the exam, these areas of knowledge begin to percolate as you spend more time in review, but don’t think you need to know everything, or have been exposed to everything before you decide it’s time to mail that exam application in.

It’s not about what you can recall at this moment, but what you will be able to recall after successfully completing the journey, and the rich opportunities that will naturally seep from it.

I preach taking the journey of becoming a Professional Engineer head on because it’s relatively inexpensive (pennies compared to what it could potentially bring you), because it opens up abundant career opportunities, and because most engineering graduates can do it, and do it NOW!

Learning the art of “just enough”

You could go out and get a PhD in engineering, or whatever you want, and you still wouldn’t be an expert.

You’re never going to learn everything. You’re never going to master everything.

But every successful engineer, heck every successful person, knows the art of “just enough”.

Like almost everything else in life, you’ll get most of your results from just a few key actions (Pareto’s Law). Learn those actions, refine the use of them, and you’re golden.

Can you spend the rest of your career perfecting your discipline? Can you add refinement after refinement to keep growing beyond your original goals?

Absolutely. Lots of people do. But here’s the deal…you have to get moving first.

You need a Roadmap

I realized when building my website out, that I had a ton of information in there (nearly 250 pages and over 9 hours of videos, and rapidly growing), it could be really intimidating to know the simple answer to where to start in preparing for the exam.

So I sketched a quick Roadmap for you in the EIT Preparation Boot Camp. I outlined a detailed, yet simple overview of the process of becoming a registered engineer, the mindset it takes, and how to get yourself organized and ready to execute.

The study schedule I summarize within takes a huge overwhelming task in preparing for the Engineer in Training exam and breaks it down in to a manageable set of stepping stones. Breaking the process down in to something that I could wrap my head around is how I was able to set myself up for success on my journey, and precisely how I got moving.

Successfully preparing for this exam is done one step at a time. If you never get moving, you’ll definitely never get there.

You need a “Quick Win”

Whenever we start on a journey, regardless of what it is, we need to establish a Quick Win to help build our morale and give us a sense of achievement and enhanced momentum towards our ultimate goal.

But where can we find that quick win when it comes to preparing for the Engineer in Training Exam?

I can suggest one area to consider.

Take a quick look at the specifications of the exam, specifically the breakdown of each topic and its proportion within the exam; which topics initially stand out the most.

Here are the first 5 subject areas of the AM exam as well as the proportion for each:

And so on…

Well, right off the bat, we are looking at 45% of the AM exam, 22% of which is straight Math.

So are you saying that getting math down would be a Quick Win?

Well how many of the other subjects involve Math? Let’s take a look…

The final 55% of the AM exam are the topics of Engineering Economics, Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Materials Properties, Fluid Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Thermodynamics.

How many do you feel have elements of Math…I would suggest that 100% have some sort of Math included.

But before we draw any conclusions, let’s take a look at the first 5 subject areas from the “other” PM session of the Engineer In Training Exam, they are:

In looking at 47% of the PM ‘Other’ portion of the exam, chalk it up to another 19% of which is pure Math.

The remaining 53% of the PM exam are the topics of Engineering Materials, Fluids, Electricity and Magnetism, and Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer.

Is Math something that is prevalent in any of these subject areas?

I think we have established where our Quick Win lies, and this would be more than a Quick Win, it would be, proportionally speaking, a “Huge Win”.

But where do you Start? Math is huge, yes, Math can be intimidating, yes, but that’s precisely why I created the EIT Academy Math course.

You need to start small. Very small, one subject at a time, from the basics and build on it until eventually (faster than you may think) you have the subject dominated.

If you can keep focus on this saying this year, you’re going to make a lot more progress than you did in the past…

Do more of what works. Do less of what doesn’t work.

Quadratic Equations – Fundamentals of Engineering Review

Hey what’s going on everyone, it’s Justin Dickmeyer from EngineerInTrainingExam.com.

In today’s video we are going to present a Fundamentals of Engineering Exam Review of Quadratic Equations.

We’ll start off this tutorial by defining a quadratic equation, we’ll move on to solving quadratic equations using factoring, then we’ll move on to the quadratic formula and finish off with defining the discriminant.

So let’s start off our Fundamentals of Engineering Exam Review of Quadratic Equations by defining exactly what a Quadratic Equation is.

So what is a Quadratic equation?

in its simplest form a
quadratic equation is ax squared plus BX
plus C is equal to 0 where a cannot
equal 0 so in other terms a quadratic
equation must have squared term as its
highest power so how do we solve
quadratic equations there are 4 methods
of solving these equations 1 we can
factor 2 completing the square factor by
grouping or using the quadratic formula
in this tutorial in this quick review
we’re going to talk about factoring and
the quadratic formula so a quadratic
equation can be solved by factoring if
after writing that equation in its
standard form the quadratic expression
factors completing this process can be
done in four steps step number one is
getting an equation we want to simplify
it we want to take away any parenthesis
division we want to add like terms
once simplified we want to get it that
equation into the standard form of ax
squared plus BX plus C is equal to 0
step number 3 factor
once we have factored we want to solve
so that’s all let’s look at a quick
example let’s take the equation x
squared plus 3x minus 10 is equal to 0
so the first step is to simplify that’s
completed step number two we want to get
in its standard form
once again convenient it’s completed
step number three we want to factor so
in this case this equation factors out
2x plus five multiplied by X minus 2 is
equal to 0 so we want this product to
equal to 0 so in step number four we
need to solve that and we can just
visualize and see that we’re going to
get X is equal to negative 5 and X is
equal to 2 so this quadratic quadratic
equation has two solutions X equal
negative 5 and X equal 2 so let’s talk
about the quadratic formula you can
solve any quadratic equation by using
the quadratic formula this is convenient
when a quadratic equation does not
factor or is difficult to factor so once
again there’s 4 steps or excuse me
there’s 5 steps in completing this
process step number one is given an
equation we want to simplify just like
that previous factoring we want to get
rid of any parenthesis division we want
to get rid of or combine like terms
step number two is the same as well we
want to get it into standard form so
once it’s in standard form of ax squared
plus BX plus C is equal to zero we can
move on to step number three which is we
need to identify what a is equal what B
is equal and what C is equal once we
identify what a B and C is we can take
the
podriatic formula which is X is equal to
negative b plus or minus the square root
of b squared minus 4ac divided by 2a so
we just take our values of a B and C and
we plug them into this equation and then
step number five would be whatever those
values all are if we can simplify and
make them complete whole numbers and
that’s great let’s do that so once again
let’s look at a quick example let’s take
the equation 2x squared minus 5x plus 1
is equal to zero
once again step number one of
simplifying is done step number two of
getting it in its standard form is
completed step number three in this case
a is equal to 2 B is equal to negative
five and C is equal to one step number
four we take the quadratic formula and
populate it so in this instance where
you go – of negative 5 plus or minus the
square root of negative five squared
minus four times two times one and
that’s all over two times two so let’s
move up here now that we have all of our
values for a B and C plugged into the
quadratic formula we can solve and we
get X is equal to 5 plus or minus the
square root of 25 minus eight divided by
four and this doesn’t simplify and do
whole numbers or anything but we can
simplify it a little bit as X is equal
to 5 plus or minus the square root of 17
divided by 4 so those are our two
solutions for this quadratic equation
so let’s talk about the discriminant
when we’re given an equation or a
quadratic equation x squared once again
BX plus C is equal to zero right off the
bat we can take a look at it and know if
we can divide define a B and C we can
define the discriminant and if we can
define the discriminant then we can use
a couple known factors to determine what
our solutions are going to look like to
these this equation so in other words
let me define it like this the
discriminant in the quadratic formula is
that under the square root of the
quadratic formula on the top which is b
squared minus 4ac so we have all these
defined in a given quadratic equation
and if we do we can determine what type
of solutions we should expect to see so
in other words we can put this into a
table say we define our discriminant and
that discriminant is less than 0 if it’s
less than zero then there are going to
be two distinct real number answers
solutions to that quadratic equation if
that discriminant is equal to zero then
there’s going to be one real number
solution if that discriminant is greater
than zero then there’s going to be two
distinct complex
imaginary numbers solutions so that’s it
so the discriminant once again the
quadratic equation minus B plus or minus
the square root of b squared minus 4ac
divided by 2a this right here that’s the
discriminant so once we get a quadratic
equation we can determine what the value
is of that discriminant take it to our
table and know what we know what to
expect when we determine our solutions
so that’s that that’s that quick
overview of quadratic equations I

How do I motivate myself to study Topics that I just don’t enjoy?

It’s not uncommon to absolutely have zero interest in some of the topics covered on the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. These topics may be ones that we had previously enjoyed participating in while in college, but for some reason or another, we find ourselves far from interested in picking up a book and diving in. Unfortunately, we don’t have a choice whether or not they will be on the exam, so with that, we need to find a way to peak our interest so we can best prepare ourselves for success.

Whether your disinterest is in one topic or several, it’s a must to force ourselves in to putting adequate time in to becoming at least semi proficient with the main fundamentals of each subject or else we risk failure on the exam.

It’s obvious that as human beings, we spend our time doing things we enjoy, why would we want to do otherwise? This is the first barrier we need to confront and overcome before we can make any progress in studying these subjects. When you sit down to make your study calendar, put the subjects you dislike in the first few weeks. I suggest this for a couple of reasons:

You will likely have the most energy at the beginning of your study journey, giving yourself more of a chance to weather the storm of the discomfort of doing something you don’t enjoy.
When you do something you enjoy, you tend to put off the things you don’t, which in this case, may mean not adequately preparing yourself in an entire subject. Do what you don’t like up front and get it out of the way.
Getting in to subjects that you enjoy at the middle and end of your study journey will give you momentum and confidence going in to the exam, they won’t beat you to the ground like the others you don’t enjoy.

We all have to do things we don’t like to do, that’s life. Understanding that we aren’t alone in this endeavor, we can work on altering our approach and thinking so we can have the best chance of succeeding; this is a stepping stone to becoming a successful Engineer. The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam isn’t only a content exam, there are relevant life lessons that come from preparing for and taking it as well.

The next thing I would focus on is breaking the subject down into micro study sessions rather than tackling the subject as a whole. This will give you clear, achievable goals and will keep the overwhelm and disinterest from creeping up. There’s no silver bullet to it, but approaching these subjects with a steady hill approach, rather than a steep mountain, will be much more manageable while working through the discomfort.

Another approach I stress in all areas of studying for the exam, is to make it personal. Think about where you will be if you don’t accumulate the drive to study for these subjects. You will likely put yourself in a position to have to retake the test. Sometimes when you introduce these “If, then” thoughts in to your thinking, your mind will adjust to take the path of least resistance. When your mind feels like it is in danger, it will do some miraculous things…so make it personal every time you sit down to study.

Lastly, consider approaching your studies of these subjects in a different way. Maybe opening up a book and cranking out hours on end of reading text doesn’t work. Change that up, watch tutorials on the internet, make flash cards, work though practice exams. Maybe the traditional approach just isn’t going to cut it for these subjects, so make it fresh, and switch it up.

There’s no rule that says we have to love everything there is about engineering, but there is a rule of life that guarantees we will encounter things that bring discomfort. Adjusting our approach physically and mentally is the best weapon of choice when we encounter these times, and there is no better time than now to begin employing it.

When studying my Review Manual, how can I decipher which information will be on the AM versus the PM exam?

Due to the nature of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, there is really no way to completely define the difficulty of the problems that will be seen on the AM portion of the exam versus the afternoon session. What is set in stone is that the AM portion is the breadth portion of the exam, focusing on key concepts covering a wide array of engineering topics. This should give us comfort in knowing that any one specific subject will not be gone too far in-depth. However, who is to say what is considered in-depth, it’s a subjective term and that’s where the advice can get a bit choppy.

That’s why you will see many review manuals put together as in-depth reviews of each section covered on the exam. I am a believer in the theory that you can’t be too prepared, especially at this critical point in your career. I write my reviews and my practice exams at a level of difficulty I feel is above what you will see on the exam. My stance is that when you prepare at a level above what you expect to see on the exam, you are more capable to adjust on the fly come exam day. You will be more level headed when you encounter problems you don’t know right off the bat and able to jam through others that seem “elementary” because you prepared far above the level they are written. So to reiterate, soak up as much information as you can in every subject without getting too caught up in whether or not it will be included on the test. You can’t go back exam day and review, so prepare when you can and reap the benefits later.

I received my Degree outside the States, can I still apply for the exam?

Engineering degrees from universities outside the United States are accepted on a State by State basis. No foreign university is ABET accredited, therefore, it is up to the applicant to prove to the state board that their foreign degree is equivalent to a ABET accredited degree. Some states are more helpful than others, offering guidance for applicants on what outside organization to use to validate such foreign degrees (CPEES, ACCRAO) ; while others don’t offer any support at all. You can learn more about evaluating a foreign degree by contacting your state board or checking out the Engineering Credential Evaluation International (ECEI) at www.ecei.org.

If you attended and received a degree from a University in Canada accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board then some states accept this as equivalent to EAC/ABET accredited degrees. Check your specific state’s requirements early in the process of applying for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam to ensure you fully understand what the application process will consist of.
